SCWCC Read & Lead: Supercommunicators

What if the key to better communication isn’t saying the perfect thing, but understanding what kind of conversation you’re actually having? That’s the idea at the heart of Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Charles Duhigg.

You’re invited to SCWCC Read & Lead: Supercommunicators, an interactive, discussion-based evening exploring how stronger communication can improve our leadership, workplaces and relationships.

Duhigg explains that most conversations fall into one of three categories: practical conversations about what needs to happen, emotional conversations about how we feel and social conversations about who we are. When we recognize what kind of conversation is taking place, we can listen more effectively, ask better questions and build stronger connections.

The evening will begin with 15 minutes of open networking before moving into a facilitated group discussion led by Dr. Charity Peak. Together, we’ll explore topics including:

The Three Types of Conversations: How can we recognize what a conversation is really about?
Listening to Connect: What helps people feel genuinely heard and understood?
Asking Better Questions: How can thoughtful questions lead to more meaningful conversations?
Communicating Through Differences: What can help us stay connected when perspectives, emotions or priorities don’t align?
Putting It Into Practice: What is one communication habit you can begin using immediately?

You do not need to have finished the book to participate, although it helps. Come ready to connect, reflect and share. Attendees are responsible for obtaining and bringing their own copy of the book. Find Supercommunicators at Pikes Peak Library District, Amazon, Poor Richards, or your favorite book shop of choice. Space is limited to keep the conversation intimate and meaningful.

FACILITATOR BIO

Dr. Charity Peak is the owner and college advisor at Class 101 Colorado Springs. She brings more than 25 years of instructional design and teaching experience spanning Pre-K through graduate school. Throughout her career, she has led student-success and faculty-development programs and advised hundreds of students as they identified and pursued their individual paths to success.

Before joining Class 101, Dr. Peak served as academic director for the Association of College and University Educators, where she designed and implemented programs to improve student success through exceptional teaching. She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and has served as an academic advisor and faculty member at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Regis University and the University of Colorado.
