Soirée Art Exhibition Opening: Tim Davis
Soirée is featuring its first photography exhibition with intriguing abstract work by Tim Davis from July through September 2013. An Artist Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, July 13th from 5:00 to 8:00pm. Admission is free, the art is sensational and the wine/craft beer/cocktail menu a delight to explore! The Spotlight Gallery at Soirée is designed to offer artists the opportunity to present solo exhibitions and public the opportunity to immerse themselves in a body of work created by one artist.
ARTIST STATE OF MIND
“Photography is meditation for me. I take the time to look at the lines, textures, and colors that are produced when ordinary objects interact with the environment. I see abstract paintings everywhere and collect them with my camera. When composing a photograph, I crop out everything that does not support my composition. Since my photographs are often intimate, close, and detail oriented, the context of the object is often not apparent. As a result, viewers must create their own meaning when they look at my work.
Many photographs are finished when I press the shutter. Others are just the raw beginnings of the final piece. Old, worn, weathered, and well-used industrial objects often hold the greatest attraction for me since those surfaces provide rich material for my imagination. Making artistic sense of those randomly occurring lines, colors, and textures is my meditation and joy.”
ARTIST BACKGROUND
Tim Davis has lived in Colorado Springs since 1969 when he was stationed at Fort Carson. He attended Colorado College where he received a BA in Sociology and an MA in Teaching. He has taught thousands of students, elementary through high school, for thirty years. Though he had teenage interest in the artistic use of photography, he didn’t begin his photographic arts career in earnest until the fall of 2000. Inspired by Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Way, and with encouragement from his wife, Susan Garsoe, and friend, Bruce Hamilton, he brought some pictures into public view. With further support from his photography group, Circle of Confusion,
and Rodney Wood, then director of the Business of Art Center, he applied for and received his first solo show.
Tim has since exhibited in galleries in Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City, Santa Fe, Cape Cod, and Mammoth Lakes as well as in Denver, Boulder, and his hometown, Colorado Springs. He has had two museum shows. His works have been purchased for public buildings, private collections, and recently one was selected for the permanent collection of the Midland Museum of Science and Art in Michigan. In addition, his work has graced the covers of books and magazines. From 2005 to the present, Tim has published calendars featuring his photographs. Annually, the Pikes Peak Arts Council nominates three people for Artist of the Year. Tim was a nominee in 2005, 2007, and 2008.
